arbon, would you agree that if one is to buy a new computer that it should be one with 64 bits as opposed to 32 bits. 32 will soon be obsolete...so don't get sucked in?

shh, I have been reading that Windows 7 is very complicated to download and install by yourself unless you're a geek. XP has to be wiped off..that means copying all that you want to keep and re-loading into Win.7 as well as downloading new drivers, etc. I'm not going to attempt it.

4 Gigs of Ram is recommended for 64 bit, some XP machines can only take 2 Gigs of ram.
So keep the XP with 2 Gigs of Ram if you have downloaded XP SP3.

There are going to be several Windows 7 editions, but you need to decide if you are going to run a 32 bit or 64 bit version of the operating system. If your CPU is more than a few years old there is a good chance that you can only run the 32 bit version of Windows 7, however if you have a modern processor you may have to decide between each version.

In the future , 64 bit computing will be common, as all hardware from the past couple of years has been designed with 64 bit in mind. When a complete upgrade cycle has passed for the majority of users, there is still a strong case for some users to stick with 32 bit Windows for the time being.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Installing 7 will be part of the learning curve and I will have help! The new computer I am building will have 7 as my OS. Then I will network all 3 computers. I have been told that will be a real headache .

Eventually yes...This is all new something I have wanted to learn and never made time for. Now I have some time and a lot of geek friends. The area I live in is all military and most of them I know are in tech working at Ft. Hood.

It won't be a headache for you if you use... http://www.kavoom.biz/k/index.html ... It works at many major hospitals and at the mayo clinic, through Phillips and G.E hardware and at flight simulator schools. It's software, no need for long wires, inexpensive and the service is A-1.

There are networks and networks ... depends on what you want to do. If it's only sharing folders and printers ... I can't see why MS would make it any harder on a local net with the newer OS's (but then MS is MS). Security issues maybe

Don't even thing about running programs from another PC like you might from a server ... that would be a nightmare

BTW ... new drive controllers won't handle old drives. If I upgrade I may have to use my DVD controller to access my files

I have been burning DVDs like crazy..I bought a My Book Essential 1 TB external hard drive just for movies .
I'll just bring it to Mexico and have all my movies and tv shows nice and compact ready to watch. I don't have time to watch them in Tx cause of work.

Win7 (on all your machines) is designed to be home net work friendly, Vista is network unfriendly.

I have decided I am going to build my own computer. Today I completely tore down an old one and am trying to remember all the names of everything. I put most all the key parts back in. I know where they go!!! I will do that a few times til I have it down pat! Only took me an hour.... 8-)

What I am looking for is diagrams of Motherboard w/ all the names of the other parts.Putting it togather was the easy part! I can't remember all the names of the parts I put in....OR...Does anybody know if you can build a virtual computer online??? :ugeek:

Any info please pass it on!!!

As with most things, the spare parts that are left over that you can't figure out where they go you probably don't need anyway and are possibly the cause of the problems. That's how I roll, although sometimes pretty shakey, wobbly and bumpy.

Wait till you see overclocking - its mostly used by gamers, its amazing seeing an application working at up to three times its normal speed. Sort of like filling you car with aviation fuel and a nitrous booster. You should start a non-profit club and society, and if you write to places like Samsung, they might/will send you sample hardware to play around with - especially if there is no other enthusiasts in your area. This tube is kind of boring to start, and I have sent it in before - but when they finally start testing the computer - its quite amazing:
