My wife and I have identical computers, with all the specifications the same. We have Infinitum, the mid-level range ($599) and are hard wired to the modem. My wife’s internet works great. Mine however is slow as molasses especially when pictures are downloading on a website. Recently I put in a new network card as mine went out. It was also slow on the old card. We have done all the cleaning of cookies, temp files, history, etc along with spyware, adware and viruses (no viruses) and defragged. We also changed where my computer hooked into the modem (we have a 4 wire).

It has made no difference in the speed of my internet. Any suggestions as to what to do next or what to check would be greatly appreciated.

Operating system and browser you're using might help. If IE - then 7 or 8. Also, virus software used

You say you put in the new network card ... but regardless, did someone loosen a memory stick _or_ maybe one just died

I would check the registered memory in both PC's

If they are identical computers could be a different setting in the "rom" when they were setup. You know, the menu that comes up when you push F8 before windows loads. Did you do the install or was it a technician? It does sound like a Trojan though- there are some real sneaky ones around. Adaware from lavasoft.com has been around for years - and they have a free 'anniversary' edition which includes a virus scanner, it picked up where my other one left off - it is very sensitive. Try a second sweep with another program.

The rom setting is the same. We downloaded lavasoft and it is running now. I plugged my computer into where the wife's computer was plugged into the modem and it made no difference. I have 1G of memory. The upload and download speeds on both computers are just about the same.

Sparks, your suggestion that I switch computers with my wife would work if I didn't want to go to sleep at night.

Ignore everything Pedro has to offer in the computer department - what does he call himself - neanderthal ??

No ... that was Arbin that suggested switching computers with the wife - he actually has one (wife) and thinks he knows how to handle the results

Pedro thinks a computer 'mouse' is a little white creature that runs around in the box, firing the power for the damn thing.
