Les Perreaux
Montreal — From Saturday's Globe and Mail
Last updated on Saturday, Sep. 19, 2009 12:19PM EDT

Renée Wathelet dreamed of turning her social media hobby into a portable business that would allow her to move permanently from Montreal to an island paradise.

Mexican officials had given her the final stamps of approval to live out the fantasy of an internet consulting business when her life met a bloody end.

Ms. Wathelet, 60, died on Thursday in her apartment on Isla Mujeres, Mexico, after an intruder bent on stealing jewellery and her laptop computer stabbed her 46 times and cut her throat.

Mexican police said they arrested a 24-year-old boatman named Jose Joaquin Palacios Garza at the scene carrying a bloody knife. Investigators described Mr. Palacios as an acquaintance of Ms. Wathelet who was intoxicated and mentally ill.

Getting to know people in Mexico (who make themselves available) to fill in the blanks and make your Blog more interesting can be risky.

I don't know her Blog

Whoops ... but not in English

"Mr. Palacios was an acquaintance of Ms. Wathelet who was intoxicated and mentally ill."

I hate sentence constructions like that. Who was drunk and crazy?

Actually I read in the paper that this is a new word young people use - crunk = crazy drunk.

Another one was IMAO = In my arrogant opinion!

But young people have not changed, they still cringe when any of the 'older' folk use these hip terms.

I guess you are expected to retain the info that you have just read in the previous paragraphs.

All day long, CTV Newsnet has been following this story with A Shooting In Mexico City... apparently a fellow was spray painting something at a subway station, and when police tried to arrest him he pulled out a gun and shot at several people...

I've been going to Isla Mujeres for 10 years or more... terrific place... but, of course there's going to be a criminal element ..
With the tibit of info that was offered up as news... one can only speculate as to what truly happened.

That one news ( blip ) followed up with the subway shooting does almost seem to be making a pattern....

Stay home for the holidays folks.. Mexico is dangerous...

i read this in the edmonton journal who proceeded to also write about every balconey death and murder in the past several years. they don't put every murder in edmonton in the same article every time they write about one there-do they? and there are plenty.
f*cking asshole yellow journalists.

It has taken 3 years to issue an arrest warrant for the suspect in the Laniero murders, an ex-body guard of the State Governor.

That is what will not be forgotten, injustice.

I am so sick of this shit.
If there's a murder in P.E.I., should nobody vacation in Vancouver?

It's not just about Canadians, but the Mexican and Canadian justice systems.

Amnesty International welcomes the release of Mexican prisoner of conscience Jacinta Francisco Marcial, who was held in prison for three years after being falsely accused of kidnapping six federal agents.

The mother of six, an Otomí Indigenous woman from Santiago Mexquititlán in the Mexican state of Querétaro, was sentenced to 21 years' imprisonment in December 2006.

“The Mexican government has finally recognised that there was never evidence to justify Jacinta’s trial and conviction of 21 years imprisonment on charges of kidnapping,”

Just this past February... US & Canadian News outlets were going on about Mexican Drug Cartels, Murders & of course Swine Flu...
At the same time Vancouver Area had 18 murders in 30 days... barely a blip about that...
