Since Pedro's moved to town, the Mexican world has turned topsy turvey. First the revelation about the professional level Mexican bagpipers, now the largest ice rink in the world has been opened in Mexico City.

What's next - curling? (no - not the hair variety, the hurling of giant rocks on a sheet of ice, sounds sort of Aztec in a way)

We have a large hockey/ice rink at an indoor mall here in Mérida, very popular in the summer.

I have been told there is a rink in Torreón, but I have never been there.

And who can AFFORD to recreationally skate or play league hockey in Mexico?

Only the same people.
Who can AFFORD to ski WHISTLER, B.C. in winter, and shopping trips to Toronto, when they like?

Who's this?

The top 1-5% of the total Mexican population?

rolly - was it you who posted that there was a ski resort in Northern Mexico?

It may be easier to get a visa to Canada for a ski vacation, especially for a whole family. There is also a well documented problem of the mistreatment of Mexican citizens by US Customs/Immigration - whether they are wealthy are not, they are going to be treated as though they intend to stay. Canada Customs/Immigration treats everybody the same - bored indifference.

From watching the skaters this last summer, I think it is not just for the super rich but also the middle class. There is what appears to be a very strong middle class here in Mérida. There were the Mexican equivalent of US soccer mom's sitting at the rink side cafes drinking coffee and talking with their friends while their kids took lessons or played hockey. It's a pleasant place to hang out in the heat of summer.
