Never heard of anything happening in Mazatlan. Are you confusing Mazatlan with Morelia?

You are safe if you live outside of the drug corridors and are not involved with drugs or the cartels.

The guys who were gunned down were involved in the drug trade.

No it was definately Mazatlan. Google it and you will see the old articles. Now I guess all the people that live in these border towns are stupid???? Wow do you ever need to take a reality pill. I heard there was a meth lab right in your backyard off the Carretrra in Chapala. Hopefully no one is "stupid" enough to be caught in any trouble around there.........

Bob

CanuckBob - Wrong again!!!! I don't live in Chapala. There is no meth lab in our back yard. If there were, neighbors would report it.

I don't doubt they exist in the Village area though, in fact I'm told they're in the bad areas.

John, the point is meth labs can be anywhere..drugs are such big business that the drug dealers can buy houses anywhere they want and can employ college kids to cook the stuff. What better place to put a meth lab in a mid to upper scale neighborhood. It is happening all over here in the US.Again that could never happen in MX. Just watched a show last night where the industrial air cleaner/scrubber blended in with the swimming pool equipment. This was in Upscale Colorado Springs neighborhood.

Quote:
A Guadalajara drug bust in January uncovered a huge lab, with 11 pressure cookers that could make 400 pounds of methamphetamine per day -- far more than the 20 or so pounds a day typically produced by "superlabs" in California.

many ex-convicts and fugitives from the U.S. relocated to Mexico, including a former chemistry professor from Idaho who set up his own meth lab south of the border.

Granted this was in 06, nope not in Mx...There are plenty of more recent stories..

Actually, johninajijic does live in Chapala; the Municipalidad de Chapala, of which, Ajijic is a small part.

RVGringo - It is part of the Municipality, but it's still a seperate town. There is a HUGE difference between Chapala and Ajijic. Why do you think so many gringos buy and live in Ajijic and there is so much building going on here? It is because Ajijic is MUCH MORE desirable than Chapala. Chapala is a dumpy old city.

pedro - If there was a meth lab in the hills, the Federales would have put them out of business by now. Maybe you know because you're a druggie or associate with low lifes like you.

I have only known poor Mexicans to live near arroyos, in other parts of Mexico.

No it was definately Mazatlan. Google it and you will see the old articles.
Canuck Bob, I think if you read the articles again you will find that no one was killed at the mall in Mazatlan. In fact, I do not believe any shots were fired. I live there. I read the papers. Some bad guys, who had in fact killed a police officer in another location in Mazatlan, ran into the mall to evade police. They actually took 2 hostages, Mexican business men, and used them to escape. They dropped the 2 men off on the highway outside of town, unharmed. The police did not fire because they did not want to endanger innocent people. As I understand it, most of the people in the mall didn't even know what happened. This is not saying that bad things don't happen in Mazatlan. It does point out that the foreign press sometimes reports the news in an irresponsible way. There were some drug killings in ANOTHER town in Sinaloa about the same time, and these 2 events were reported as one.

What I find amazing about this 'drug trade' is that everyone seems to focus on the organized crime making a fortune off it, not the true victims, the meth addicts poisoning their lives. These might possibly be your nieces, nephews, cousins, sons, daughters - all on the brink of permanent destruction. Its a damn waste. There will always be addiction problems (remember the 'Noah the Drunk'?), but with the vast array of pharmaceuticals out there, I am convinced that there is one which makes people happy, escaping their troubles, which also non-addictive and proven to be medically safe. While there will always be a sub-culture I believe these people would choose a legal, safe, and much cheaper alternative if it were available.

Anyways, the 'addicts' are the true innocent victims in this 'drug war'.

In reference to my earlier request in this string for info about an incident that happened to the son of a friend of ours in Cancun a few days ago here is the story he reported to the newspaper and the RCMP when he arrived back to Vancouver via Medivac from Cancun last night. He was flown back by the Canadian consulate. Pretty unbelievable story but this kid is shot up and scared shitless.....

Something definately happened to him......
