In reference to my earlier request in this string for info about an incident that happened to the son of a friend of ours in Cancun a few days ago here is the story he reported to the newspaper and the RCMP when he arrived back to Vancouver via Medivac from Cancun last night. He was flown back by the Canadian consulate. Pretty unbelievable story but this kid is shot up and scared shitless.....

Something definately happened to him......

I sure hope he's alright...

One of the things I would always advise newbies to the country, is to dress down ( leave the jewelry at home ) Mexico is after all more about sandals.... and if cruising around boozing be respectfull you are in a different country and naturally should be a little more cautious....So avoid late late nights out at the titty bar :)

CanuckBob - Wrong again!!!! I don't live in Chapala. There is no meth lab in our back yard. If there were, neighbors would report it.

I don't doubt they exist in the Village area though, in fact I'm told they're in the bad areas.

Dude, you have either never stepped outside in all the time you have lived there or you have your head stuffed so far up your ass that you must be able to fart out your nose. Take off those rose colored blinders and get a grasp on what is going on all over the place including Chapala (which includes Ajijic).

People like johnnyboy are similar to the three monkeys or at least two of them - see no evil & hear no evil! They live in their "premier gated community", with their heads buried in the sand, failing to consider that some people in the drug trade are smart enough to keep a very low profile and appear to be regular citizens and may just be their neighbors! Secondly, something as simple as driving down the road or gassing up at the PEMEX could result in being caught in a crossfire. When it is "your time" - then arrogance and elitism does little to protect you!

By the way, this would be true not only in Mexico but also in the U.S. and even Canada!

Especially in Arizona and ABQ, New Mexico (where chinagringo lives) as do some of the drug kingpins live.

How can one person really be this dumb? There are drug kingpins in every State and major city in the U.S.! At the very least, I don't have my head stuck so far up wherever to not realize it! How would you know it if a drug kingpin was interested in that house you have for rent in Ajijic's premier gated community? You think he might have a tattoo on his forehead saying so? Naturally, we can assume that you would not rent to him if he was a Mexican but there are probably Gringos in Ajijic and the rest of the Lake Chapala area that may be involved in the drug trade. OH NO! There goes the neighborhood!

Make sure you include most all the states...The drug lords have more power and money than the mafia ever had in it's hey day!

John, people have tried to state the truth as best as they can..You will only believe what you want, and what your inner circle friends tell you...God forbid someone you love or know is ever effected by the truths that have been spoken...You have the fact's whether you know it or not...

Fortunately God protects fools and idiots.. I wise man once said, Don't over use that privilege. As we all know, lightening can and does strike, and most time it can be fatal!
Make sure you have plenty of St. Christopher's everywhere you go! NEVER LEAVE HOME WITH OUT IT !!!

Shush:

johnnyboy thought that he was insulting me by referring to AZ and NM! Naturally his home State of MA doesn't have these sorts of problems. However, if my memory serves me correctly, wasn't Boston a "hotspot" for mob and political corruption? Head in the sand doesn't even begin to describe where this arrogant fool's head is! Just have to wonder how many meals he and his band of merry food groupies have eaten alongside someone involved in the drug trade? Naturally, that would never happen since someone would tell them!

Many years ago, we were on a little trip to Las Vegas... :D
Whilst visiting the Mirage we noticed the crowd to be particularly dapper.. only, the guys in the $2000.00 suits acted like a bunch of greaseballs... Didn't take much guess work!!

So, in the parking lot, as we were leaving, a drop dead  gorgeous blonde dressed in a white sequin evening gown, was havin a little problem with one of the greaseballs...
My buddy, Darcy, asked the fella what the problem was, just attempting to calm the situation down a bit....
When greaseball turned to Darcy, basically to tell him to go f*ck himself... at that very moment.... the drop dead  gorgeous blond booted greaseball ...BANG ON... she shoulda tried out for the NFL..
Damn ... I was in love... anyway we got the hell outta there fast..
Laughing all the way...

Some more info:

Quote:
The maras have links to an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 members in more than 30 US states, including Massachusetts, according to the FBI. With their role in trafficking people, illicit drugs, and weapons into the United States, the maras pose a transnational threat that sets them apart from other street gangs.

But gangsters have adapted, said Oscar Bonilla, president of Salvador's National Council on Security. ''They have reduced their tattooing, changed their style of dress, and had fewer open confrontations with other gangs," while maintaining criminal activity.

They live and walk amongst you;

Central America's brutal Mara gangs have taken root in Mexico because law enforcement is too busy fighting drug smuggling to go after them, a government commission charged Wednesday.
Some 5,000 members now are active in about 200 cells in Mexico, the governmental National Human Rights Commission reported, calling the gangs' rise a problem of national security.
