Next Monday. 1 June, the toll road between Colombia and I35 will become an automated toll road -- no more toll kiosks to take cash. Users must have a TxTag to use the road. This will pretty well exclude travelers to/from México.

Does anyone know a practical workaround?

Actually, one can use the toll roads without a TexTag. It's just that there are no collection booths on segments such as the one outside of Laredo. By using the road without paying, therefore, the registered owner of the vehicle will get a bill which includes the fare plus an administrative penalty. No big deal. I don't know how they handle Mexican plates which have been photographed using the road. Perhaps a warrant is issued and then if the car is ever stopped, the driver would be arrested.

The way I get it is that you don’t have to live in Texas just have as US address of any kind, somewhere to mail too. You can apply online, put money into your account, minimum $20.00 US, and they mail the tag. It is electronically scanned as you pass through and the funds deducted from your account.

What Sharpie say's is true, with one exception. If your car is plated with an out of USA plate(Mexican or Canadian), there is no way to register on line. They require a US plate number and state.

I'm not sure this is correct. In the online application, one of the state abbreviations is MX. For sure, Mexican residents can enroll by calling customer service at 001-512-874-9998

Just got off the phone with th TxTag people. I reg. my Ontario plated car with no problem at all. They will send to tag to me here.You have to give them a credit card number, they set up an acct. , then The toll reads the license plate and they deduct the amount of the toll from your acct.
