According to tradition, the devils of Teloloapan patriotic originated in the War of Independence, relevant in the state of Guerrero, that at least seven kilometers away Acatempan, a town where they found the insurgent army chief, Vicente Guerrero, and the Royalist army, Agustín de Iturbide, 10 March 1821, what began with the end of the War of Independence.

It is known that one of the closest associates of Vicente Guerrero, the bold and intelligent Alquisiras Pedro Ascencio, won several battles between 1818 and 1820, partly because land good knowledge of Guerrero and in part by their military strategies and unexpected attacks.

Tradition says that one of the followers of Ascencio, Jose Atanasio, a native of Tierra Caliente, one of his jokes got the leather used in your region to protect themselves from thorn bushes, and a mask carved from wood and decorated with bull horns and horsehair. She completed her outfit with a whip, shocking himself and tissue and was amused by his platoon mates in a moment of rest.

On one occasion when Pedro Ascencio decided to take to the insurgent army Teloloapan population, was ambushed and his troops besieged by the royalists. A ring of soldiers prevented people out rebels and even for food. Then, inspired by the devil costume Joseph Atanasio, Ascencio occurred to his troops to wear similar outfits. The village women, free from suspicion of the enemy, provided the colorful wooden mask carving and ran a rumor that the devil was about Teloloapan. Many realists believe.

So one night, the sudden appearance of the devils distributed by the people shocked and frightened the enemy guards, who fell under the bullets of the insurgents and they were able to break the siege.

After celebrating the victory in the plaza of Teloloapan, "devils" gave their masks to the young men who recalled the event every year for the launching of the independence movement.
