Dede Scozzafava, the Republican and Independence parties candidate, announced Saturday that she is suspending her campaign for the 23rd Congressional District and releasing all her supporters.

Ms. Scozzafava told the Watertown Daily Times that Siena Research Institute poll numbers show her too far behind to catch up - and she lacks enough money to spend on advertising in the last three days to make a difference.

Even Newt Gringrich, supporter of the official GOP candidate, has been cowed:

"Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who’d previously warned that backing Hoffman in the NY-23 House race amounted to a “purge” of the GOP, told POLITICO Saturday morning that he was now endorsing the conservative, "and believe[s] everyone who wants to create jobs with lower taxes and to control spending and deficits should vote for Hoffman Tuesday."

If you recall, many right extremists denied the official GOP candidate and threw their support (and money) behind another extreme right candidate who is not local nor is aware (nor cares) about local issues. The message to the GOP is clear: the Republican Party can no longer nominate moderate candidates, or else face a right-wing revolt.

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

A profile in courage, it isn't....
“It’s all about self-interest in most cases,” explained University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato.
NY-23 has become a powerful symbol for the right, and any candidate who is trying to stay out is finding neutrality to be very difficult.
It’s not brave politics. It makes for an easy call for politicians to jump on the conservative nominee. Not all Republicans in Congress feel power is more important than basic principles.

This hemorrhaging of GOP establishment support to Hoffman is almost like there are two parties now and makes one wonder if the NRCC will be relevant anymore. It is every man for themselves.

Ronald Reagan must be turning in his grave. Whatever happened to his big tent GOP?

It is getting more and more interesting, this situation. The Watertown Daily Times initially endorsed the GOP candidate and has now moved over to the Democrat candidate. Here is what the editorial says about the parachuted extremist right Conservative Party candidate:

"Mr. Hoffman is running as an ideologue. If he carries out his pledges on earmarks, taxation, labor law reform and other inflexible positions, Northern New York will suffer."

http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/arti ... -1/OPINION

It is frightening that Mr. Hoffman is so beholden to right-wing ideologues who dismiss Northern New Yorkers as parochial when people here simply want to know how Mr. Hoffman will protect their interests in Washington.

The race has changed, but voters still face an important choice. Northern New York must send to Congress a representative who serves their interests first and foremost.

The Times endorses Bill Owens (D) for Congress.

OUCH!!
