I had a hot water tank fail after only a year (the tank) and a friend tells me bleach can eat them up (bleach is an oxidizer and speeds the rusting process).

I have been putting a half gallon of bleach in our well almost every month. I think it was just faulty manufacture

What failed the tank or the elements? Some times if the tank doesn't fill up while the elements are on they will burn out prematurely. They will also fail quicker if you have a lot of lime or iron in the water. Andale........

The previous tank lasted probably 8-10 years and the burner went. That's when I put in this new tank a year ago. Given that I doubt the water is a problem. Sadly can't find my receipt and try to deal with warranty for the first time in Mexico.

Now have a Cinsa which a number of people have recommended

Chlorine can definitely corrode a typical water heater. I know this because I am looking for an alternative (cheap) heater for my jogging pool (about 8000 litres) - too small for a pool heater. So I thought an on demand hot water heater, and was told that the small amount of chlorine in he water would corrode the heater unless I could find one with stainless steel elements and plumbing. I am still looking.
