Thanks Jonna

Bob was not doing well for the first two nights after surgery but he improved the next day and the tests showed we did not need a second surgery. We have our insurrance with AXA and they were on stand-by to fly him to Mexico City if needed. They called this morning ( Sunday morning!) to offer to fly us back to Ajijic this morning! We passed as we want to be here for a while.
Bob checked out this morning and is now recuperating at home. The doctor was great, he was from Guerrero and studied at UNAM. He is a really funny and sharp guy. Now we have recommendation for a neuro surgeon, the only one in town, a gastroenterologist and a cardiologo, all living and working within 5 blocks of our house. I also was happy to find out that my next door neighbor´s son was a doctor as well and he was at the house rightaway when I found Bob passes out on the patio.
Bob ended up in two different hospitasl. One is run by nuns and is very basic and poor but it is the cleanest place I have ever seen anywhere. The nurses are great and efficient.
The other hospital was fancier offering a heater and a tv but was not very clean . The nurses were nice but did nothing for the patient and were hard to find. A scary place if you do not have anyone staying with you.
Love to you both
Brigitte

Glad to hear he is home and doing better. It's also good to know that AXA was so great. He is a lucky man to have you to watch over him. Keep us informed, we also care a lot for that guy.

Brigitte, glad to hear Bob is doing better. I lost my husband 2 days after Christmas, and I list you as my friends even though we haven't yet met. Take care of the big bozo.

Thanks, Wen. My son, granddaughter and I plan to take his ashes to Mazatlan in March. He loved it there.

So glad to hear our HD is doing well and am looking forward to his story about this experience! I consider you two as friends, also, even though we haven't met. But you, Brigitte, made my first trip to San Cristóbal so fulfilling and memorable, and Bubba is, without a doubt, the best writer and story teller we have here! I wish him a speedy recovery. Diane

I have expressed my sympathy privately to Ms Mac, but will do so again here. I look forward to seeing you and your family here in Mazatlán, Mary, and I think your decision to spread Ivan's ashes on the Pacific that he loved is very appropriate. You already know that you can call on me if you need help with the arrangements. Abrazos, Dee

Thanks, Dee, love you guys. And Bubba is definitely our number one story teller and entertainer.

Forgive my delay in responding to you all thanking you for your notes of sympathy regarding my recent gall bladder removal and recovery from what turned out to be dam-ned scary major surgery because of obstructions in my digestive tract that nearly did me in necessitating emergency surgery on New Year´s Eve. This was a humbling and frightening experience and your kind expressions of sympathy meant a great deal to me during the arduous recovery period which is not over yet and will not be for at least a couple of more weeks.

My sympathies particularly go out to Ms. Mac who lost her husband about the same time I entered the hospital in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. We wish Ms. Mac the best after her ordeal if that´s possible.

This was to be our first Christmas season in San Cristóbal which was to be nearly a month of seasonal reverie in a town noted for its popular community-wide Christmas celebration complete with music and dancing in the streets and plazas; not an interminable stay in a dark, dingy and filthy hospital but who am I to complain. I´m still alive and seem to be recovering and that beats the alternative I was contemplating there for a while. Maybe next year for the Christmas street celebrations that attract people from all over Mexico who rent up every available hotel room in town.

As it turned out, becoming deathly ill in urban Chiapas or anywhere else is a most unpleasant experience but we had great doctors which is a subject I´ll talk some more about when I´m feeling better. I have many stories some of you who travel about will benefit from hearing but must say I´d rather not have been your source on this one.

More later on combatting serious illness in remote Chiapas. There is good news and not so good news about that just as would be the case anywhere but I will say right off the bat that the various physicians who served our needs in San Cristóbal were very impressive and highly professional. No need to seek help in Guadalajara or Mexico City even though our major medical coverage would have paid in full for air ambulance service anywhere in Mexico had we taken them up on their offer.
